Ian and I had been wanting to visit Turnip Rock in Port Austin, after hearing a lot about it. We camped in Port Austin in August 2015 at Port Crescent State Park. The next morning we rented some Kayaks and headed out on Lake Huron towards Turnip Rock. The whole trip was about 7 miles there and back and took about 4 hours. Some parts of Lake Huron got a little rougher and it was definitely a lot harder to Kayak back because of the way the current was going. It would be best to go on a really calm day with little wind.
Heading to Turnip Rock was much easier and we didn’t have to paddle as hard. Once we got closer and turned a corner, Turnip Rock finally came into view. It’s a large, beautiful rock formation set inside a little cove. We kayaked around and behind turnip rock and parked our kayaks up on a little sand bar within the cove. There were some caves and some land around Turnip Rock to explore. We had a little picnic on a rock and then headed back out. There were surprisingly a lot of people also there. We thought it would be quite empty. It was the perfect little trip for a relaxing weekend, but with a little adventure. Overall, it was an interesting experience, a fun Kayak ride, and made a great camping weekend.
